Halloween is right around the corner, and soon the streets of Amarillo are going to be filled with kids looking for candy and parents trying to keep up. Cars are going to be parked all over the place and frustrated drivers are going to be trying to get home. It's a special night we all look forward to. This Halloween, make sure you take the extra moment to keep your kids safe by following these easy steps.

The Best Ways To Keep Trick-Or-Treaters Safe This Halloween

When it comes to keeping your trick-or-treater safe, you can take some really easy steps. The Potter County Sheriff's Office shared these tips:

  • Make sure your kid can see out of their costume. Those masks can be cute and a total pain to try and see well out of. We've all had a mask on Halloween that was impossible to see out of.
  • Make sure that your kid's costume has some kind of reflective tape or fabric on it. This will help drivers see your kid.
  • Give your kid a glowstick or a flashlight. It will help them see, and help people see them...namely drivers.
  • A good idea is to go to homes you know. Stick to neighborhoods you're familiar with, or make sure you tag along with your trick-or-treater.
  • Make sure to use sidewalks and crosswalks.
  • Make sure your kid knows the number of an adult. It's especially important if they're going out without you.
  • Double-check your kid's candy haul at the end of the night. Get rid of anything that isn't in the wrapper or looks like it may have been tampered with.

Drivers Need To Drive With Extra Caution On Halloween Night

If you're going to be out traveling in Amarillo on Thursday night, pay extra close attention to what's going on while you're behind the wheel. Kids are going to be all over the place, and not all of them are going to be paying attention to you. Be on the lookout for them.

If you plan on going to a more adult-oriented Halloween soiree, don't drink and drive. Rideshare apps are a thing in 2024, there's no reason to risk tragedy on what is supposed to be one of the most fun holidays of the year. Have fun, responsibly, this Halloween.
