The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has released its warning of speeding on Texas roads and highways. They also informed citizens that they will be increasing their presence for the next few days as a result.

TxDOT's Warning About Speeding

Look, we all know we shouldn't speed when driving and that those speed limit signs aren't just for decoration, but law enforcement is cracking down on making sure Texas roads and highways are free from unsafe speedsters.

In fact, TxDOT recently released an announcement where they remind Texans to practice patience when behind the wheel. As a part of its Be Safe. Drive Smart campaign, they include some statistics that show just how devastating speeding can be.

In 2024, there were allegedly about 160,000 traffic accidents that were the result of speeding. Of this total, there were 1,467 deaths, making speeding the primary contributing factor to fatal crashes.

TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams had this to say about drivers who make the decision to speed:

Speeding is not an accident, it's a choice. When you choose to drive even just a little over the speed limit, you're not only risking your own life, you're risking the lives of every other person on the road with you and that's not being a good Texan.

Increased Texas Police Presence

In order to ramp up protection of roadway speeders and to limit the amount of fatal crashes, Texas cops and highway patrol will be in full force through August 3. This way they'll remind drivers to slow down or else face a hefty fine at the very least...

TxDOT also provides tips to keep in mind when driving in order to avoid a ticket:

  • Adjust your speed to the conditions of the road
  • During heavy traffic or slick conditions, allow more distance between you and the car ahead
  • Stay alert for road signs and reduced speed limits
  • Keep in mind that traffic fines will double inside work zones and school zones

So, especially now, always remember the old phrase "better late than never" when travelling on Texas roads and highways.
