Whoa: ‘The Matrix 4’ Set With Keanu, Carrie-Anne, and Lana Wachowski
In a word: Whoa.
Variety reports that Warner Bros. is ready to make another installment of the iconic sci-fi series The Matrix. But rather than a total reboot — as has been rumored through the years — we are instead getting a fourth film in the original Matrix series. And both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are returning to play their characters, Neo and Trinity.
(Given how The Matrix Revolutions ended, this may require some explaining. But we’ll get to that in due time.)
Lana Wachowski will co-write and direct the sequel. (Wachowski and her sister Lana created the franchise and all three of the previous films). Here is Lana’s statement to Variety on the news.
Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.
(John Wick director Chad Stahelski — who was also Keanu’s Matrix stunt double — hinted that this movie was coming a few months ago. Next time that dude talks, we all better listen.)
This is huge news; not just a new Matrix movie, but one featuring the original cast and (some of) the original crew. And Wachowski is right; The Matrix was ahead of its time, and only feels more relevant to 2019. (The flip phones may need an update, I admit.) This is absolutely a perfect moment to dive back in to The Matrix.
