I always here younger people complain about Amarillo. They say things like "there's nothing to do here" and "Amarillo's so boring." Well, there are also a lot of things that are totally awesome about Amarillo, but odds are you didn't realize it until you got a bit older.

I used to be one of those kids that complained about Amarillo all the time. Now, I see things from a different point of view. Amarillo, while is still has some drawbacks, has some things that make it an awesome place to live.

1. Cost of Living

Amarillo has an extremely low cost of living. If you have never lived in a different city or metropolis you might not realize just how much cheaper it is to live here in Amarillo. For example my family and I live in an apartment complex here in Amarillo. We pay right at $800 a month for a two bedroom apartment. A two bedroom apartment in NYC goes for $2100 a month and that is about average.

2. It's Just The Right Size

I used to complain about how small Amarillo is, and now I really like it. Yes, Amarillo has grown since I was a kid, but it is still a fairly small city. But, it is really nice to be able to get almost anywhere in the city in less than 20 minutes. In Dallas, a morning commute to the office can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours depending on what time of day.

3. The People

I never really realized how nice the people are in Amarillo until I got older. Most of the people in our fair city are kind and considerate. If you break down on the side of the road, odds are there will be someone to pull over and give you a hand. If you're walking into a store, you can bet that someone will hold a door for you. You are almost certain to hear a please, thank you, and yes sir/mam in Amarillo. These are things that you don't hear of too often in many "big cities".

4. Raising A Family

Amarillo is a great city in which to raise a family. Yes, everyone has heard of the high pregnancy rates in our city, but that has actually been on the decline. In Amarillo, while crime is still and issue and even more so as of late, it is a fairly quiet town without too much crime. I'm sure raising kids in Dallas is a completely different story.

 5. There's Not "Nothing" To Do Here

Growing up, even I always said "There's nothing to do here." That's just not the case. It may not have your Six Flags or Hurricane Harbors and such, but there are lots of fun things to do here. If you want some examples of fun things to do here in Amarillo, go here.
