‘Breaking Bad’ Spinoff Prequel ‘Better Call Saul’ Officially Happening, Dear God Why
Devastated though we may be that ‘Breaking Bad‘ will soon come to a close, leaving our jaws on the desert floor with each subsequent episode, we didn’t think the real nightmare would ever come to pass. Spinoff series ‘Better Call Saul’ has officially been greenlit at AMC as a prequel to the story of Walter White, and there doesn’t seem to be enough blue stuff in the world to cope with the news.
Word of the ‘Breaking Bad’ spinoff status comes from Deadline, who reported that the tentatively titled ‘Better Call Saul’ has a series order at AMC, awaiting the complication of Sony TV’s deals with ‘Breaking Bad’ creator Vince Gilligan, character creator Peter Gould and star Bob Odenkirk. Supposedly, several other outlets (including Netflix) expressed an interest in obtaining rights to the prequel series.
The fact that ‘Better Call Saul’ has been confirmed as an hourlong prequel series seems to open about as many doors as it closes, given that previously Gilligan had been reluctant to admit if his spinoff ideas took place after ‘Breaking Bad,’ thus establishing Saul to survive the series. That said, a prequel would allow such fan favorites as Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) or Mike (Jonathan Banks) to return.
Previously, Gilligan had talked about the idea a Saul series would take, initially undecided about a half-hour or hourlong format:
As you can imagine with Saul Goodman as a character, a show like that would have to have plenty of humor to it. But also because he works for some pretty scary clientele sometimes, there’d be a bit of drama in it as well. We’re trying to nail that down. As of yet, we haven’t completely figured that out ourselves.
We’re not afraid to admit our severe hesitation at the prospect of any ‘Breaking Bad’ spinoff, be it a ‘Better Call Saul’ prequel or otherwise, but what say you? Are you excited to hear that the ‘Breaking Bad’ universe may live on after all? What would you want to see from ‘Better Call Saul?’
