Today is National Southern Food Day! Here’s Our Top Pics for the Best Southern Food
Southern food, oh heck yes! There is something about growing up in the South and enjoying all the great southern food available. I mean this world wouldn't exist without some delicious food. So in honor of National Southern Food Day, here's our top picks for the best Southern Food.
Chicken Fried Steak
This delightful treat is a delicious steak battered up and fried to perfection and then topped with country gravy. You cannot go wrong with this wonderful meal. Make sure you have it with a side of mashed potatoes covered in gravy and a big ol slice of Texas Toast.
Chili with Cornbread
There is nothing better on a cold day than a big bowl of chili. Make sure it has some good spice and that kicks it up just another step. Plus you always have to have the cornbread whether you put the chili on top or crumble on top of the chili.
Chicken and Dumplings
I have eaten this Southern Comfort food all my life. A creamy chicken deliciousness with the right amount of dumplings. The more black pepper the better.
Grits
Let's face it for some this may not seem like the most appetizing thing in the world. I'll admit, I never ate it until one night I was at a restaurant in the DFW area and they had green chili and cheese grits. I had one bite off my friends plate and immediately turned around and ordered a side for myself. From then on, I have loved grits in all forms. Want to get fancy, how about shrimp and grits.
Fried Chicken
Not just any fried chicken buttermilk fried chicken. I grew up around grandparents who had a small farm and raised chickens, so it wasn't anything for my grandmother to run out to the chicken coop that morning and have fresh fried chicken on the table at lunch. She could cook up the best chicken ever!
Pecan Pie
My other grandmother was always an ace at making Pecan pie. It was so gooey and crunchy at the same time. Oh how I would love a big giant piece right now, topped off with a dollop of whipped cream.
BBQ
A couple of slices of perfectly smoked brisket. A slice or two or three of smoked sausage. A half a rack of ribs. We love our BBQ and the south wouldn't be the south without it. Oh and of course the BBQ sauce!
Mac and Cheese
Don't even asked about the boxed kind. Nope! We are talking the creamy made from scratch baked mac and cheese. The southern style mac and cheese, you can't go wrong with the cheesy goodness. It's a meal in itself.
