Vin Diesel Says He Put Facebook on the Map + Mark Zuckerberg Owes Him ‘Billions Of Dollars’
When he’s not blowing things up on screen or making that signature Vin Diesel face, Vin Diesel likes being online. So much so that he thinks that social networking behemoth Facebook owes him big-time.
Diesel sat down with Entertainment Weekly to promote ‘Fast & Furious 6′ (yes, there are six now), and he seemed pretty comfortable taking credit for the major timesink Facebook has become for us all.
“What Facebook didn’t realize is something very big was about to happen, and that was — for the first time in history, and it’s kind of a fluke they didn’t see this coming — when I jumped on that page in April 2009, I started talking to people. In the realest ways,” Vin told the mag.
It’s true. Before Vin Diesel joined the site, we hadn’t even heard about it. And Facebook didn’t see it coming, because people never start websites with the intent to make money.
“Imagine if you could’ve been a Facebook friend to Marlon Brando, or whoever your role models are,” Vin mused. “Imagine, if you were able to Facebook Elvis, and talk to him, and hear from him without the Hollywood of it all.”
(Admit it. You were reading this thinking Vin Diesel is the Marlon Brando of our generation, and he totally just read your mind.)
Vin claims that when he joined, Barack Obama was the only person with over a million “likes,” but that changed with a quickness. Soon, Diesel had tens of millions of likes and was besting big-name brands like Coca-Cola at the social media game.
“And it was only because I said: ‘Hi, guys, I love you,'” he said.
Eventually, Diesel’s poking prowess lead to him being invited to Facebook HQ so they could figure out how he was accruing these numbers. “Facebook used to ask me to come up to their office to explain what the f–k I was doing, and why I had so many fans,” he said.
Ultimately, he says the success was due to him putting the personal touch on everything. “I never let anyone do a post, I never let anyone post for me in the last four years,” he bragged.
“My audience knows me so well on the page that if my producing partner’s in the room when I post, they’ll know somebody was around me. That’s kind of cool, that’s how sophisticated they are. Facebook really owes me billions of dollars. But whatever.”
