The Amarillo Police Department announced along with Texas Department of Public Safety increased police presence will be seen over the long Labor Day weekend. The beefed up presence will begin Friday citing drivers not wearing seatbelts, speeding and intoxicated driving violations.

“DPS reminds all travelers to be responsible and practice safe driving habits this Labor Day,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “It’s imperative for everyone to do their part to keep our roadways safe, and DPS will also do our part by increasing patrols and enforcing traffic laws this holiday weekend.”

With the Labor Day weekend fast approaching, the Amarillo Police Department would like to remind everyone that there is a great possibility that there will be more cars on the road. Anytime there are more cars on the roadway there is a better chance of an accident occurring. A Comprehensive STEP (selective traffic enforcement program) grant received from the Texas Department of Transportation will allow for extra officers to be on patrol enforcing traffic laws over the weekend. Both grant funded and regular patrol officers will be out looking for seatbelt, speed, and alcohol related violations. We just ask that everyone be safe and if you drink…don’t drive. We hope that everyone has fun and safe holiday weekend.

Have a safe and responsible Labor Day Weekend Amarillo.
