Amarillo’s Sod Poodles To Transform Into Yellow City Pigweeds
If you've paid any amount of attention at all to the Sod Poodles since they arrived in Amarillo, you know that they like to have fun. Part of that fun is the alternate identities that they take on during the season. For instance, the Calf Fries. This year, we have yet another identity that we'll be taking on.
What The Heck Is A Pigweed And What Does It Have To Do With Amarillo?
The Sod Poodles released the news today that the new alternate identity for the year would be the Yellow City Pigweeds. The logo includes a cartoon pig, that looks a bit like a wild hog, wearing a cowboy hat and overalls. It's being chased by a tumbleweed.

If you're confused by the name, like you were with Sod Poodle when it first came out, look at the tumbleweed. That's what ties it all together. According to the press release that came out today, it's the plant that eventually turns into those iconic rolling balls of thorns that cross the road without looking both ways.
Nod At Life In The Texas Panhandle Leads To New Sod Poodles Alternate Identity
According to the press release, the choice to call the Pigweeds the Yellow City Pigweeds is a nod to the city and our longest-running nickname. Yellow City comes from the yellow soil and yellow flowers that are found in the area.
The alternate identities are always a lot of fun, and the Calf Fries were award-winning. Hopefully, the Yellow City Pigweeds can live up to the expectations. There will be several games when the Pigweeds will make an appearance:
- April 27 - Debut and Replica Jersey Night
- May 30
- June 25
- July 31
- August 17
- September 11
