Back in the Day-A Flag Was Raised
February 23rd, brought us the FCC, historical flag raising, the end of a comedy duo, the beginning of a doomed marriage.
1927 - The FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION, was created when President Calvin Coolidge signed a bill creating the Federal Radio Commission. The name was changed in 1934.
1945 - Some guys named Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes and John Bradley were on a beach in Japan and had their photo taken by Joe Rosenthal. The photo showed them RAISING THE U.S. FLAG atop Mt. Suribachi on IWO JIMA.
1965 - STAN LAUREL, the skinny half of LAUREL & HARDY, died of a heart attack in Santa Monica, California. (Upon Hardy's death, Laurel vowed to never perform again. He never did. Oliver Hardy, died of a massive stroke in 1957. He was only 138 pounds at the time. )
1994 - NANCY KERRIGAN was coming home with only a silver medal from the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.
2002 - LEANN RIMES married Dean Sheremet, a backup dancer she met during her performance at the CMAs three years earlier.
(They're divorced now. LeAnn is engaged to Eddie Cibrian an actor she met on a movie set. )
2006 - The ONE BILLIONTH legally downloaded song was purchased on iTunes. That song? "Speed Of Sound" from COLDPLAY'S 2005 album, "X & Y".
