Recorded-breaking heat can turn a normal hike into something dangerous. Here are some tips for your next trip to PDC.

If you have been in Amarillo for a while, you know that hiking and camping in Palo Duro Canyon is a summer must. This year has been incredibly hot, with temperatures reaching over 100 for many consecutive days. This past Saturday PDC State Police and Lifestar responded to 18 reports of heat exhaustion and sun poisoning within a four hour period.

Just because your phone says its 101 degrees outside doesn't mean it's the same temperature in the canyon. In some spots, temperatures can reach up to 151 degrees.

Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe and healthy on your next summer trip to the canyon.

  1. Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or sugary drinks.
  2. Remove any tight or unnecessary clothing.
  3. Try and take a wet rag or towel to rap around your neck.
  4. Always notify park personnel when you arrive what trail you will be on.
  5. Avoid hiking during the hottest parts of the day. (Noon-4pm)
  6. Never travel alone.
  7. Use common sense.
  8. Find shade as soon as you start feeling too hot.
