Hey Texas, These Holiday Plants Are Poisonous For Your Pet
Everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes our holiday decorating. Our outdoor displays are massive. Inside our homes, we rival Santa's workshop for the title of "Most Yultide Joy". Part of those decorations are holiday plants, but you need to be careful. Some of them can kill your pet.
Not All Holiday Decorations Are Pet Friendly
My dog has a very unique ability to eat anything he can reach. We've had to check and see if every plant in our house is toxic for dogs because he'll eat a leaf or flower every now and then. You could say he's a little odd.
When it comes to holiday decorations, we've had to be even more careful. We had to research our tree and make sure nothing was within his reach because he'd have a nibble. Thankfully, the group at TrustedHouseSitters put out a list of holiday plants that are dangerous for pets.
Which Christmas Plants Are Most Dangerous For Pets
When you're setting out plants to decorate for Christmas this year, you need to be cautious when it comes to these:
- Poinsettias - They can cause skin and eye irritation. If ingested, they could cause vomiting, lethargy, and drooling.
- Holly - The berries can cause vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and abdominal pain. Leaves can cause injuries to the throat and mouth.
- Mistletoe - The berries contain toxins that can cause breathing difficulties.
- Wreaths - Usually contain leaves and berries that can be toxic if your pet ingests them.
- Amaryllis - These red and white flowers can be very toxic. If ingested, they could cause vomiting, drooling, abdominal pain, tremors, lethargy, drop in blood pressure, and seizures.
While all of these plants are popular to have in your home this time of year, be careful where you place them and keep an eye on your pet.
