Recently, forecasts started calling for temperatures to be in the upper 90s and possibly into the triple digits. This prompted Palo Duro Canyon State Park to take to social media to remind everyone to take precautions if they plan on hiking.

One thing they brought up is how hot it can get in the canyon. Just how hot does it get in the Grand Canyon of Texas? When it comes to the canyon, you have to look at two things: the air temperature and the ground temperature.
For instance, in July of 2024, the air temperature was 104 degrees. The ground temperature was 131 degrees, according to information posted online by Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Take the air temperature and add 20 to 30 degrees. That's how hot it is in Palo Duro Canyon.
How To Keep Yourself Safe Hiking In Extreme Heat At Palo Duro Canyon
If you decide to brave the heat and go down into the canyon, there are some things you need to keep in mind before you go. A few simple preparations can make sure you stay safe while enjoying one of the most beautiful natural wonders in Texas.
First, you'll want to stay hydrated. I've spent plenty of time down in Palo Duro Canyon and I know that the heat can be brutal. Drink plenty of water before you go, and take along plenty of water for the amount of time you'll be out there. If you take your pet, make sure to pack water for them.

Second, be smart about where you're hiking. Stick to marked trails, and take breaks in the shade when possible. Also, go early in the morning or later in the evening. Avoid hiking in the heat of the day if possible.
If you plan and prepare, you can still have a good time at Palo Duro Canyon even when it's hot outside.
