Is Tornado Season Here? Buckle Up Amarillo, It Might Be

I gotta tell ya, the last couple days of weather have been BEAUTIFUL!

Sunny, 85-90 degrees. It feels like spring has officially arrived.

Oh wait, that means along with those warm temps and light breeze come gray skies and severe weather.

I've said it many times before, Amarillo is absolutely bi-polar when it comes to its weather and the end of this week is shaping up to prove that point.

Here it is Thursday and the high was predicted to touch 90 degrees. Yesterday it topped out in the mid-80s. Just when you think you can start breaking out the shorts and flip-flops permanently for the season, it throws you a Friday curveball.

A strong storm system is blowing in...and it's coming strong. When I say blowing in, I pretty much mean barrelling in. Winds are going to average around 30 mph throughout the day as it creeps its way into the 806.

We're going to have to hold onto a pole as they're expecting wind gusts around 60-80 mph. Well, couple high winds with warm temperatures, and what's that a recipe for? Yup, you guessed it. Tornadoes.

Now, I want to preface this by saying it is a slight to moderate risk we could see some popup, or touch down. Along with that, we could see golfball size hail and all of that makes for an extremely damaging storm.

These spring storms always seem to be the worst of what we see, and this is the first one we could see for the season. Now the overall thought is that these storms will not be widespread and should remain relatively centralized and that's good news.

However, it doesn't mean you should let your guard down. Pay attention to your surroundings, don't drive in treacherous conditions and be sure you have a safe place to shelter should these storms begin to get out of control.
