Route 66 Celebrates 100 Years in November 2026
When it comes to historic stretches of road in America. Route 66 is one that a lot of folks know of the top of their head. It goes from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California. Next year, they're celebrating 100 years of this road across America and special ceremonies are taking place across the country. Fun fact, one of the coolest parts of Route 66 is right here in Texas.
Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, Texas
For anyone traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles on Route 66, they can mark their trip with a pit stop in Adrian, Texas. Home to the Midpoint Cafe, the exact halfway marker of Route 66. Back in it's heyday it was open 24/7. Now it is just open for breakfast and lunch from Wednesday to Sunday. The pancakes are actually branded with a Route 66 logo on them and you're encouraged to lick your plate clean.
Ugly Crust Pies are a Must Order
The old pastry chef at the Midpoint Cafe dubbed their pies as 'Ugly Crust' pies. She claims the pies are not as pretty as the ones her mother made, but they taste so good you will want to lick the plate clean. No matter what you order for breakfast or lunch, a slice of pie has to be ordered if you visit.
Midpoint Cafe Inspired Pixar's Movie 'Cars'
In 2006, Pixar released 'Cars' and in that movie. Lightening McQueen gets stuck in the town of Radiator Springs. Flo's V8 Cafe in that town is inspired by the Midpoint Cafe. In fact, the creators of the movie visited this part of Texas in 2001 and they say the workers of the V8 Cafe are based on the servers in the restaurant. In fact, Flo's V8 Cafe in the movie has the ugly crust pie as a nod to the Texas restaurant. If you visit Flo's in Disneyland (pictured above), they serve burgers, chicken, and salads. Sadly, no pie though.
So if you find yourself traveling down Route 66 on your way to Chicago or Los Angeles. Grab a slice of pie to celebrate being halfway through your trip.
