5 Chilling Texas Ghost Towns That Are Decayed and Abandoned

When you think of Texas you might imagine fast-paced freeways in Houston or the creative (but weird) murals in Austin. While Texas may be a hustling and bustling state it's also host to an incredibly surprising amount of ghost towns.

WHAT IS CONSIDERED A 'GHOST TOWN'?

A ghost town is typically a town that once had an economic activity that supported its community but at some point failed and as a result, the town became damn near abandoned.

Unfortunately, Texas has plenty of ghost towns spread across the state. It's a bit eerie and mysterious which is exactly why we needed to showcase some of the strangest ghost towns in Texas. Scroll down and check out ghost towns in Texas with some pretty recognizable names.

SYLVESTER, TEXAS

This tiny Texas down looks completely decayed. Two brothers from Abilene founded this town in 1903. At one point the small town had a population of around 600 however, in 2000 only 79 people remained in this town.

BARSTOW, TEXAS

When a nearby damn broke so did any chance of economic survival in this town. Droughts infested the area and vegetable and fruit crops had no chance of production, leaving businesses with no product.

INDIANOLA, TEXAS

Indianola used to be the capital city of Calhoun County. Sadly a horrific hurricane in 1875 nearly wiped out the entire town. The area was rebuilt only to be destroyed again by another powerful hurricane. The last remnants of the town were then burned to the ground by a fire.

CHEAPSIDE, TEXAS

Go looking for it and you might get lost. The town of Cheapside is a now decayed area of land. Driving through the area you will see eerie buildings and even a chimney sitting in the center of a lot with no house in sight.

TERLINGUA, TEXAS

The old town of Terlingua saw the end of its days after their mine flooded, making mineral prices plummet. The town still has a few spread-out shops that still keep their decayed look going.
