TxDOT Confirms New Loop 335, U.S. 87 Construction Plans
We absolutely LOVE road construction here in Amarillo and Canyon, don't we? I mean, we love it so much we say "bring on more of it", and they do.
Ok yes, I'm being about as sarcastic as I can possibly be here, but at the end of the day, the road construction DOES actually help once it's finished. So even though there's more coming since it just got approved, I want to complain, but I want to be happy.

Two More Projects Will Begin Soon
The Texas Department of Transportation just laid out another 10-year plan for road construction and improvements around the state, and with that, Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle will see about a quarter-billion dollars get dumped into improvements.
The project not directly tied to Amarillo is the widening of U.S. 87 from U.S. 385 to just west of U.S. 287. The other project is directly tied to Amarillo and involves Loop 335 and taking care of some issues there.
What Are They Changing on U.S. 87
U.S. 87 has a pretty busy stretch that can get congested and create some issues. The plan is to widen it and turn it into a freeway instead of just a two-lane highway.
Stretching from U.S. 385 to just west of U.S. 287, the plan is to turn it into a four-lane divided highway to help alleviate that congestion between Moore & Hartley counties.
What Plans Are In Place For Loop 335
This is the big one for Amarillo. This is directly related to the stretch over by West Plains High School that has been an issue for some time now.
The plan is for that stretch to be a four-lane divided highway, but also to build a bridge at Arden Rd. to help with the traffic flow. This should also hopefully ease some concerns with students being able to get to school. The project isn't slated to happen until 2030 and 2035.
