Football reigns supreme in Amarillo and Texas as a whole. Every kid grows up wanting to play football, and every parent wants to see their kid throw the pads on and get after it.

Unfortunately, not everyone wants to dive into the tackle football world. Some kids are afraid of serious injury, parents the same thing. Some kids just don't like getting tackled, but love the game.

Lack Of Flag Options In Amarillo

Now, before I dive too deep into this, there ARE options for flag football around Amarillo, but only up until a certain age. My youngest son played flag through Kids, Inc. this past season, but eventually, you age out.

As you hit high school age, your options are typically limited to playing for your high school or going to have fun with your friends. That's about it. Adult leagues are available, but only once you've turned 18. So, where does a high schooler go when they still want to compete in flag football?

New Flag Football League Coming To Amarillo

Amarillo native Mark Jackson recognized the need, and now, Amarillo will get to reap the benefits. Jackson is forming the Action Sports NFL Flag Football League, and it's going to plug a hole that desperately needs filling in Amarillo.

The league is for 13 to 17-year-old kiddos who still have that passion for football, but not for getting crushed in pads. Flag football has grown in popularity quickly over the past few years. The NFL Pro Bowl has moved to the format, and it will be an Olympic sport in 2028.

Registration is already open for it, and play begins on June 6th.
