Amarillo’s Thompson Park Just Got an Amazing Inclusive Upgrade
Amarillo has been in a really good spot the last few years when it comes to growth. Not just development-wise, but population as well. More and more people are moving to Amarillo, whether it's to escape big city living or maybe the reverse, and looking to get out of a small town.
Either way, it means more people, which comes with more expectations. Especially those who are coming in from a bigger city. There are a ton of amenities in those cities that they become used to, but Amarillo doesn't have. I would personally know, since I moved here from Austin. There are a lot of places I'm shocked we don't have.

Thompson Park Gets Major Upgrade
Well, that's starting to change around the city, and it all began with Thompson Park. Makes sense considering it's one of the most attended places in the city. A new playground is now open, but this isn't your typical playground.
This is an inclusive playground, designed to be fun for everyone, including those with disabilities or mobility impairments. This is something Amarillo has severely lacked, and now, it doesn't.
What Makes The Playground Different
First and foremost, it's the accessibility of it. It's not just the kids they had in mind with this, but adults with disabilities as well. No, they may not be playing on the equipment, but if they can't move around and get to the playground, then their kids can't go. This new playground is accessible to everyone.
Other things included at the playground, making it more accessible, are roller slides, which help reduce static for those who have cochlear implants. It has mobility devices to allow those to reach elevated play areas that they typically wouldn't be able to get there with mobility impairment. It also includes many sensory, cognitive, and social elements.
You'll find the new playground near the site of the old Thompson Park pool.
