When it comes to driving in Texas, you have to have a driver's license.  As with most states, that is the law to operate a vehicle.  When it comes to Texas, we have seen an evolution of driver's license designs over the years.

That isn't stopping; in fact, the Texas Department of Public Safety is once again updating Texas driver's licenses and identification cards.

When Will Texas Driver’s Licenses Change?

As of Monday, August 18, 2025, the new DLs and IDs have a new look.

Along with the new look, more security features have been added. To prevent people from reproducing these cards, they will now feature tamper-resistant polycarbonate material compliant with the standards of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.

What’s New in the Texas Driver’s License Design?

You will also notice the gold star missing; the new cards will have a laser-engraved black star in the upper right corner. This star will signify that the card is a REAL ID.

This new design will make it more difficult for criminals to produce fake IDs. Fake IDs are used for many reasons, including nefarious acts, changing someone's identity, or underage persons attempting to purchase alcohol or enter bars.

Will I Need to Update My Texas Driver's License?

The state is not requiring an immediate update of driver's licenses or identification cards. Your current DL or ID is still valid until it expires. After expiration, you will be required to upgrade to the new Texas DLs and IDs
