If you're ever on the road in Amarillo, Texas and you get the feeling that you're being watched, there's a good chance it's because you are. Recently, I noticed a camera attached to a traffic light pole. Knowing that red light cameras are no longer allowed in Texas, I started wondering what these cameras could be looking for.

What Are These Cameras Looking For In Amarillo, Texas?

The camera is hidden somewhat inconspicuously on the back side of a traffic pole. It doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, and I'm not sure how many times I've passed by it without realizing it's there. There is a panel on the opposite side of the pole that is slightly more attention-grabbing.

Red light cameras are no longer legal in Texas, so I knew it couldn't be something like that. They also aren't for catching people speeding. Speed cameras are also prohibited in the Lone Star State. So, if they're not for catching us running red lights or speeding, what are they for?

Say Hello To License Plate Reader Cameras

I do believe I've finally seen a license plate reader camera (LPRC). License plate reader cameras are exactly what the name suggests. You drive by, and it records your license plate. It's a pretty simple concept. They aren't out in the open and aren't meant to grab attention.

Supposedly, these cameras have assisted in numerous cases. Of course, they've been used as a tool to help recover stolen vehicles. They've also helped in several other kinds of cases, whether it's helping catch someone who is wanted for a crime or a missing person case. It's an interesting concept that seems to pretty much work as intended.

Earlier this year, news came out that Amarillo was getting more of these cameras. No exact locations were given, but they were going to be installed in multiple areas of town. While they may not be looking for you running a red light or speeding, they'll still get you for other crimes.

If this isn't a license plate reader camera, what the heck is it?

What Is A Day Like In Texas Prisons? A View From Both Sides Of The Bars

Have you ever wondered what life inside a Texas prison is really like? I asked friends who are correction officers and folks who have volunteered at jails. I also asked former inmates, and browsed forums and articles with current and former inmates. Put all together, it paints what I hope is a fairly accurate picture of daily prison life in Texas.
