Lake Meredith is home to plenty of legends about massive fish, none more famous than Meredith Mike. While Meredith Mike's size has been debated and seems to grow every time someone tells the tale, there is one massive catch that has been a record holder for almost half a century. Here's the longest-standing biggest catch at Lake Meredith in the Texas panhandle.

What's The Longest Standing Record Catch At Lake Meredith?

With all of the recent talk about Meredith Mike, I decided to do some digging and see if I could find what big catches have happened at Lake Meredith, and how long those records have stood. I was shocked to find one that's almost made it to 50 years of being unbeaten.

In 1978, on May 29, a record-setting channel catfish was caught. This channel cat was 33.25 inches long and weighed a whopping 22.75 pounds.  Ever since that day, no one has been able to topple that catch. John Switzer's record channel cat has been unbeaten for almost 50 years.

Current Catch Records At Lake Meredith

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has a website that breaks down records set at all the lakes in Texas. It's a massive database, and it's pretty interesting to go through and look at all the different big catches. At Lake Meredith, some of the big catches that stood out are:

  • Catfish, Channel - John Switzer, 1978, 33.25 inches, 22.75 pounds
  • Catfish, Flathead - Paul Warren, 2008, 45 inches, 39.25 pounds
  • Bass, Smallmouth - Timothy Teague, 1998, 23 inches, 7.93 pounds
  • Bass, Largemouth - Kelly Jones, 2001, 25 inches, 12.25 pounds

You can find more records that are held at Lake Meredith by following this link to their website. Some of these records have been held for a very long time. It makes you wonder if any of them will ever be beaten.
