Not Dating Leads to Better Social Skills? I Have Questions.
A new study came out recently stating that teens who don't date have just as good, if not better, social skills and less depression. I'm not sure that I'm sold on that.
As a guy who didn't date in middle school and high school, I can honestly say it wasn't any fun. Looking back, I don't know that I would recommend that to anyone.
I still experienced depression...severe depression. My depression just didn't come in the form of heartbreak from a "relationship" ending. My depression came from feeling like I was totally alone and no one wanted me around.
Our friends at ABC7 reached out to an assistant professor at WTAMU about the study, and they also had some reservations.
When I think of my kids, I don't want them to go through their teen years feeling like I did. I also don't want them to go through the heartache of a breakup, but maybe learning to deal with loss isn't such a bad thing. It's going to happen at some point.
I would rather be around to help my children go through it, than for them to face it alone years later down the road.
The assistant professor mentioned earlier did state that parents being actively involved in the lives of their children is most important, because it helps kids make better decisions.
