Music has been in Phil Collins blood since birth.  Especially since the age of five when he was given his first drum set.  Phil Collins hit the music seen in the 70's in the United Kingdom as a drummer with the band "Flaming Youth."  However, it wasn't until he joined the band Genesis that he became a household name.  He was the drummer for the band and back up vocalist for Peter Gabriel, with the occasional lead.  When Phil Collins took over lead when Gabriel left the band in 1975, Genesis had their first international hit by the end of the decade.  Then Collin's had a successful solo career as well.

Unfortunately, the world may be losing a great artist. No Phil Collins isn't dying but it seems he is retiring.  He can no longer play the drums like he used to because of a spinal cord injury.  To an artist who makes a living playing music,  you either play your best or you don't play at all.

He tells "FHM" magazine, quote, "It's a good time to stop.  I don't really belong to that world and I don't think anyone's going to miss me.  I'm much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.

"I look at the 'MTV [Video] Music Awards' and I think:  'I can't be in the same business as this.'"

He adds, quote, "I'm sorry that it was all so successful.  I honestly didn't mean it to happen like that.  It's hardly surprising that people grew to hate me."

A world where people won't miss you?  Phil!  Are you crazy?  Of course the world is going to miss you.  You gave the world great music.  You gave the world great memories. Yes, when it came to your relationships you were not very nice when it came to ending them, but as a musician you rocked!

A world without Phil Collins?  Each day I work, I look forward to my daily dose of Phil Collins or Genesis.  Each time I sit down with my son and watch "Tarzan", I realize that he's learning about Phil Collins, a great musician, writer, and drummer, all because Phil Collins wrote a song for a Disney Classic.

I don't see myself as being a die hard Phil Collins fan but it does make me sad that a musician of his genius is leaving the business.  I truly hope that he continues to write music even though he cannot play the drums like he used to back in the day.

Phil Collins the world loves your music.  You are still relevant in today's music world.
