Prepare Yourself. January Is A Crazy Month For Brilliant Moon Activity.
No matter your reason for loving the full moon, you've got to be excited about this month. We kicked off the new year with a super new moon, and we've got two full moons to look forward to. One of them is all about wolves.
The Full Moon On January 17 Has A Very Interesting Name
The full moon coming up on Monday carries a very unique name with it. It seems in recent history, more people are becoming obsessed with the various names for the full moons.
Monday is the Wolf Moon.
What Is A Wolf Moon?
As much as I would love to be able to say that this has anything at all to do with werewolves, unfortunately it's nothing like that. No, it gets its name in honor of regular, run-of-the-mill wolves.
The name comes from the howling of wolves in the month of January. They become active and go on the hunt looking for food.
Food isn't as abundant in the deep winter months, so the wolves would heard outside of villages howling in hunger. Or so the legends go.
Double Trouble This Month. We Get Two New Moons.
We kicked off the month with a super new moon. If you don't remember it, that's probably because you can't see a new moon. When we have a new moon, it's usually the best time for viewing the night sky thanks to how dark it gets.
This month, we get a second new moon in one month. While this isn't the most unheard of lunar oddity in existence, it's not something that happens all of the time.
The second new moon, or Black Moon as its called, will be on January 31.
