Rise In Amarillo Thieves Stealing Firearms From This One Place
This time of year in Amarillo, we are constantly being flooded with vehicle safety reminders. We need to make sure we have a winter weather emergency kit ready. Don't leave your car running in the morning unattended with the keys in it. There's one tip though that is a little more concerning than the rest. Take your guns out of your vehicle and put them somewhere safe.
Rise In Car Burglaries Leading To Stolen Firearms
While it might make you feel better to have some form of protection hidden away in your vehicle for those "just in case" moments; it's actually turning out to be pretty problematic in Amarillo. The Amarillo Police Department recently took to social media to address a recent rise of cases where thieves are looking for firearms.
According to their post, they've seen an increase in reports of suspects prowling through neighborhoods looking for unlocked cars. Now would be a good time to remind you to always lock your vehicle when you're not in it. The part of their post that really got my attention was what the thieves are looking for; firearms.
Thieves Skipping Money And Jewelry And Going For Firearms In Amarillo
Their post states that in many of these cases that they're seeing, the Amarillo Police Department is noticing that money and jewelry aren't what's attracting the thieves. These thieves are leaving those things behind and going for firearms instead.
When you get home and go inside for the night, take your firearm inside with you. Put it somewhere safe. Sure, it might be more convenient to leave it in your vehicle, until your vehicle gets broken into and your trusty little friend goes missing. It's not that big of a hassle, and it keeps these firearms from getting into the wrong hands.
Also, lock your doors. Unless you just started driving yesterday, you should be in the habit of locking your doors before you go inside. It takes a second, and it might keep you from walking out to a nasty surprise in the morning. Don't make the thieves' job even easier by leaving out the welcome mat...so to speak.
Protect your valuables this holiday season, so that you can spend that money on gifts instead of replacing what some thief stole from you. The Amarillo Police Department also reminds everyone that if you see something suspicious, give APD a call.
