‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 Big Bad Will Become Series’ ‘Main Villain’
The Demogorgon may have come and gone, but the threat posed by Stranger Things’ Upside Down has only just begun. To that end, it seems whatever new big bad we meet in Season 2, series creators tease said beastie will become “our main villain.”
Even as we still don’t know the deal with that giant spider-like creature from the Stranger Things Season 2 Super Bowl trailer, creators Ross and Matt Duffer told E! that the next big bad will pose a much more lasting threat than the Demogorgon. The pair didn’t specify which threat they meant, but nonetheless teased:
I don’t know if I want to give away more but I will say that the threat that is introduced this season is something that will carry over for more than just this season. So it will become sort of our main villain, shall we say, for the show.
For what it’s worth, the showrunners did seem to be responding to an inquiry of the “monster” in the sky, rather than whatever human threat Paul Reiser’s character poses, as picked up from Matthew Modine’s Dr. Brenner in Season 1. The series-long threat may not be that monster itself, but perhaps some manifestation of it.
Elsewhere of Stranger Things Season 2, we know the next chapter will move from its summer perch to a Halloween 2017 premiere. The story will pick up in the fall of 1984, while creators Matt and Ross Duffer have teased a James Cameron sequel influence in crafting the second chapter.
We’ll also learn more about the Upside Down, as teased in our exclusive concept art piece, while Sadie Sink and Power Rangers star Dacre Montgomery have been added to the cast in regular roles, along with Brett Gelman, Goonies alum Sean Astin, Aliens baddie Paul Reiser and actress Linnea Berthelsen. The full list of directors has also been revealed, including Finding Dory helmer Andrew Stanton.
We’ll learn more of Stranger Things Season 2 in the coming months, so stay tuned for additional details, and check out the teaser again below.
