Super Awesome Spots Around Amarillo Where You Can Go See Meteor Showers
I don't know about you, but sometimes I love going out to the middle of nowhere and skywatching. Although I love city life, it's my chance to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some peace and quiet while staring up at the stars.
There's Meteor Showers Happening
Speaking of, did you know that every August and September there's a peak in meteor showers? One celestial event in particular is called the Perseid meteor shower and it's visible until August 18th.
These nature shows can be quite spectacular. Unfortunately, places like Amarillo have what is known as light pollution. The city lights can make it both difficult and impossible to clearly see the night sky. So if you want to see any of these neat meteor showers this month or next, you're going to have to get outta town.
Where To See The Perseid Meteor Shower around Amarillo
Here are a few places that I recommend around the Texas Panhandle for a good view of the meteor showers:
- Lookout Point- Located on state highway 207 on the south rim of the canyon this picnic site will give you a clear view of the night sky. It doesn't get any more picturesque than seeing stars, a meteor shower, and having the canyon as a background view.
- Caprock Canyon- located near the teeny tiny town of Turkey, this location is another great place to view the night sky. This is great for anyone wanting to take a day trip out of town.
- Cadillac Ranch- A great place for anyone not wanting to travel far from home. Make sure to look west for the best view of the meteor showers.
When I get the chance, I plan to set up camp near Turkey. How about you? Where would you go to see the meteor showers this month and September?
