The Weird Reasons Some Texans Think They’re Above The Law
In case you aren't familiar with the sovereign citizen movement, it's a rather large and growing group of people who believe that majority of laws do not apply to them. They're everywhere, including right here in Texas.
What Is A Sovereign Citizen?
Before we get to the giggle fits we're about to endure, I need to make sure you understand what we're dealing with. Those who belong to the sovereign citizen movement claim that they answer only to, their interpretation, of common law.
As you probably suspect, this leads to a whole lot of problems for the sovereign citizens. Listening to them try and navigate their perceived legal loopholes feels like giving yourself a migraine while trying to see your own forehead.
They don't particularly believe that they should be forced to carry a driver's license, pay taxes, obey speeding limits, and other similar things that we all admit are a pain in the butt, but we have to do them anyway.
Yes, You Have To Have A Driver's License In The State Of Texas...
...and pretty much everywhere else. That's what this guy found out. Heads up, there's a few bits of foul language. Sovereign citizens, it turns out, also aren't bound by the laws of good manners.
You really, really, have to give the officers a round of applause for remaining cool through the whole ordeal. I lost my temper at least twelve times watching that. I can't imagine the psychological torture of standing there, just trying to get through your day, listening to this man explain why he doesn't have to have a driver's license.
Yes, It Is Illegal To Drive Over The Speed Limit
This Texas sovereign citizen gets caught speeding, and isn't too keen on being kept down by "the man" trying to make him slow down. He gets pulled over for going 92 in a 65.
Yikes.
Again, hats off to this officer for being cool as a cucumber during the whole thing. I have to admit, I giggle-snorted a few times watching the officer's head jerk when things kept getting wackier, and wackier.
Yes, You Need To Get Your Vehicle Registered And You Need Insurance In Texas
This sheriff in Texas was having none of this guy's nonsense. The sovereign citizen winds up getting his truck towed.
Another cool, calm, collected officer. Hats off, even when things take on some strange religious overtones.
