As the state loosens its requirements on wearing a mask, a big one has now landed. No more masks at school.

Yesterday, Gov. Greg Abbott laid down the new mandates stating that starting June 4th, students, teachers, parent, visitor or other staff members are not required to wear a mask inside the schools.

This is one of the biggest hot spots in the mask wearing debate because of how many people are inside a school at any given time. Obviously everyone wants to keep our students and staff safe. School is an essential requirement and the last thing we want to see is a rash of students and teachers getting sick. However, with the vaccines happening all over the country and the COVID-19 active cases dropping in Texas because of it, Gov. Abbott feels the masks do not need to be used anymore.

As the parent of 2 elementary school aged kids, I've heard and seen it all when it comes to masks in schools. At first, my kids were ok with it and understood why they needed to wear them inside the school. We also understood why we weren't allowed to go into the school and do things such as eat lunch with them. Over time though, my kids started to complain about how the masks were distracting, how they would constantly fog up my oldest sons glasses. He started spending more time messing with his mask trying to keep his glasses clear so he could see, and that started to take his attention away from what was being taught.

We also saw both of our kids start breaking out with heat rashes because of the masks, and at one point it got so bad, we kept them both home from school for a day or two after the weekend so they could focus on healing that.

Again, I 100% supported masks in school when they were allowed to go back. I would've been furious had they not had to wear them. At this point however, I feel this is the right call. They aren't saying you CAN'T wear a mask, they're just saying you don't have to. It's now a personal choice, and I think that's the right move to make now.
