For most of us, hunger is something we have never experienced.  I'm not talking about a hunger pang because you forgot to eat breakfast, I'm talking about true hunger.  Hunger exists and it exists in Amarillo and all over the Texas Panhandle.  We are lucky to have a little gem called the High Plains Food Bank and this week you can help them out during the Together We Can Food Drive.  The food drive is going on now through Saturday, December 10th.

This is one of the biggest fund raisers for food for the High Plains Food Bank.  Look for the High Plains Food Bank this week at Market Street United, 26th and Georgia.  They are set up near the giant semi-trailers.  Their goal this year is to raise 120,000 pounds of food

If you are inside shopping take a moment and pack in a few more non-perishable items into your cart and send them over to the awesome volunteers battling the cold.  You can also purchase a red food bank "scan tag" for a $1 inside any United Supermarket in the Panhandle.

Here are some of the most needed items:

  • Green Beans
  • Canned Soups
  • Can Mixed Vegetables
  • 1-5lbs bagged rice
  • sweet peas
  • Paper Products (paper towels, toilet paper, tissue, napkins)
  • Personal Hygiene Products (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes,  deodorant, etc.)

If you are just passing by they will take monetary donations as well,  $1 in cash = $11 in food for them to give to those that are hungry.

If you don't plan on being in that neck of the woods don't forget that the Mix 94.1 Studios is also a permanent drop-off point for the High Plains Food Bank.  You can find us a 6214 W. 34th, we are just off Bell, two buildings down from KFC.

Also if you find yourself with no time to stop and donate at any of the locations you can donate to the High Plains Food Bank online here.

Hunger has a face and it is no different that yours or mine.  Please help out the High Plains Food Bank this week.
