All Trails Are Finally Open Again At Palo Duro Canyon Near Amarillo, Texas
This summer has been a rollercoaster ride at Palo Duro Canyon. Usually, we get park alerts about how hot it is. This year, we've constantly seen alerts about rain causing the trails to be closed. We finally got the alert we've been waiting for recently. All of the trails are open at Palo Duro Canyon.
The Trails Are Finally All Open At Palo Duro Canyon
We've learned a lot this summer about the trails at Palo Duro Canyon, and what it takes for them to close and reopen. If the trails were superheroes with one major weakness, that weakness would be rain. Every time we've gotten rain this summer, trails have been closed, and then partially reopened. In some instances, it seems like just when we'd get them partially reopened the rain would come and close them down again.
When you go to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park website, there are no park alerts at this time about trails being closed. Friends and neighbors, all of the trails are finally open at Palo Duro Canyon.
Now That The Trails Are Open, Go Safely Into The Canyon
Now that the trails are all open at Palo Duro Canyon, it's time to get back out there. When you do, be sure to plan for your trip accordingly. The last thing you want to do is get down into the canyon and then wind up on the news for getting rescued.
Take plenty of water with you. They recommend a liter of water per person, per mile. Stay on the trails, and don't hike during the heat of the day if you can avoid it. Also, if the National Weather Service Issues a heat advisory, certain trails will close. Those trails are:
- Lighthouse
- Comanche
- GSL
- Rock Garden
Keep in mind that when you're down in the canyon, it can be 5-10 degrees hotter than on the rim.
I'm excited. All of the trails are open again at Palo Duro Canyon. I was beginning to wonder if we would see it this summer.
