What About Us Makes Amarillo One Of The Rudest Cities In Texas
There are a lot of lists out there ranking cities in Texas from who has the best schools to who has the best tacos. I recently came across a list of the rudest cities in Texas, and I was surprised to see Amarillo on the list. After hearing the reasons why, I have a few thoughts of my own I would like to toss into the ring.
Is Amarillo One Of The Rudest Cities In Texas?
The video titled "10 Rudest Cities In Texas That Will Shock You" caught my attention because I don't consider Amarillo to be rude. Sure, we have our share of jerks; but who doesn't? What could be so bad about Yellow City that it would land us at number five on the list?
The reasons given for Amarillo making the list are:
- High crime rate
- Financial difficulties
- Extreme weather conditions
The video explains that these conditions lead to stress, and stress leads to people not being particularly kind to one another. I'm not sure I buy the math they're doing to come up with that answer. Everyone I know is stressed about something, and 99% of them aren't rude about it.
Other cities on the list include Midland, Beaumont, Odessa, Dallas, and Lubbock. If we want to put a feather in our cap over this list, Lubbock was determined to be ruder than Amarillo. So, take that, Hub City.
The Truth About Amarillo And Its Rude Reputation
Our crime rate has been high in the past. There have been reports showing improvements in Amarillo when it comes to our crime rate. In fact, we were named one of the safest cities in Texas in October of this year.
When it comes to financial difficulties, almost everyone is having financial difficulties in 2024. Things are tough. People are tightening their belts and making tough choices. That doesn't mean they're more prone to be rude. It just means they're prone to being thrifty, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's a bit of a leap to assume a town is more rude than others simply because they're dealing with the same struggle as everyone else.
When it comes to our extreme weather conditions, nothing could be further from the truth. If you want to see some true Texan neighborly behavior, watch what neighbors do any time a storm rolls through the neighborhood. In my part of town, people step out on the front porch, look up at the sky, then look across the road and wave to each other. It isn't too uncommon to see people cracking open a beer to watch the show put on by Mother Nature.
If they really wanted to peg us for something, they should have picked driving. It's a quasi-scientific fact that people in Amarillo aren't fantastic behind the wheel. There's no consensus on how to merge into traffic, people tend to pick their own preferred speed limit half of the time, and once you move here your blinkers don't seem to work anymore. Does it make us rude, though? Not necessarily.
People in Amarillo can be just as rude as people anywhere else, but that doesn't mean we're one of the rudest in the state. You just don't understand our charm.
