You know when a trailer captures a mood of a film so well you just want to roll around in it and soak it up? That’s how the first teaser for Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women feels, capturing the aura of a bohemian family in late 1970s Santa Barbara so well you can almost smell the ocean water and patchouli oil.

Screening as the Centerpiece film at this year’s New York Film Festival20th Century Women follows three generations of women in the summer of 1979. Annette Bening plays a single mother raising her son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann in a bohemian household among a carpenter played by Billy Crudup (this guy was born to rock ‘70s men’s haircuts) and a punk artist with a pink Bowie cut (Greta Gerwig). Elle Fanning also stars as Jamie’s love interest, Julie. The trailer opens with a 1979 Jimmy Carter speech, includes Gerwig dancing then angrily smashing a chair, stunning shots of beach landscapes, and Bening’s Dorothea telling her son blunt aphorisms about life and love. If this film is as poignant and heartbreaking as Mills’ Beginners, it’s sure to be a favorite.

A24 and Annapurna Pictures' 20th Century Women has also been getting loads of Oscar buzz. This film hasn’t yet made it’s world premiere at the festival, but now has an awards season release date of December 23. Just yesterday that date was secured by Martin Scorsese’s historical drama Silence (along with Focus Features’ A Monster Calls). Bening has already been tapped as an Oscar frontrunner and by the looks of the trailer I can see why. But will Bening get trumped by Natalie Portman yet again? The latter, who beat Bening at the 2011 Oscars for Best Actress, is already being touted as a frontrunner for this year’s award for her turn in JackieBut it’s only just the beginning of fall movie season, the awards race is bound to heat up from here.
