Castro County is now under a shelter in place order from the county judge starting at midnight tonight until 11:59 p.m. on April 3. According to the Castro County Sheriff's Office, County Judge Carroll Gerber signed the Amended Order-Declaration of Local Disaster due to Public Health Emergency on Tuesday.

The shelter in place orders means that residents should take shelter in their residence to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Sheriff's Office states that this is not a lockdown and there will not be road blocks. No restrictions will be placed on farmers, ranchers or their workers.

Restaurants are required to serve customers only through drive-up or delivery services.

Grocery stores, convenience stores and gas stations will continue to remain open. Residents are asked to comply with limits on purchasing certain items to prevent hoarding.

Those that do not need to be out are advised to stay at home and practice social distancing to prevent the spread of the virus.

The order was implemented due to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention concerns that COVID-19 was community spread among the four confirmed cases in the county.
