Holidays and winter months are usually tough when it comes to blood donations. Adverse weather along with travel plans can cause donations to slow. Unfortunately, Amarillo has found itself in a tough situation.

Coffee Memorial Blood Center put out a press release stating the blood supply is at critically low levels.

How Dangerously Low Is The Blood Supply?

According to the press release from Coffee Memorial Blood Center, there's usually a three to five day supply on hand. The press release states they are "well below" that level as of now. Well below a three day supply? That paints a pretty dire picture.

The press release says this could impact hospital needs.

How Did We Get To This Point?

Simple. People aren't donating as much.

According to the press release, it's a multifaceted problem. For starters, this is usually a slow time for donations anyways.

Compounding the problem is the winter weather. The winter weather we experienced this week resulted in canceled appointments and blood drives.

The press release points out that donations are already down substantially from expected levels. Fewer people donating, canceled appointments and blood sounds like a recipe for potential problems.

How Do We Get Out Of This?

Simple. Donate. It's a pretty straightforward process, and only takes about an hour.

Anyone who is 16 or older, and healthy, can donate. Blood can be donated every 56 days. Platelets can be donated every 7 days, up to 24 times a year.
