According to an article published Monday morning by EverythingLubbock, Governor Greg Abbott has declined the great honor of throwing the ceremonial first pitch of the season for the Texas Rangers.

Gov. Abbott sent a lovely letter in response to the gracious offer that he never deserved:

Thank you for the invitation to throw out the first pitch at the Texas Rangers' home opening game. I was looking forward to it--until Major League Baseball adopted what has turned out to be a false narrative about the election law reforms in Georgia, and, based on that false narrative, moved the MLB All-Star game from Atlanta. It is shameful that America’s pastime is not only being influenced by partisan political politics but also perpetuating false political narratives. The State of Texas was proud to help LMB host last season's National League playoff games and the World Series Arlington. However, I will not participate in an event held by MLB, and the State will not seek to host the All-Star Game or any other MLB special events.

Governor Abbott closed his letter with: "This decision does not diminish the deep respect I have for the Texas Rangers baseball organization, which is outstanding from top to bottom.”

The last sentence was my favorite of his extra whiny letter. It reminds me of someone trying to respectfully decline an invitation to a gay wedding, because they don't agree with gay marriage, all the while still attempting to maintain a friendship with the couple.

All of this comes after some insane new bills in Georgia that make absentee voting ridiculously hard, among other silly things. You can read more about it in this excellent article by the New York Times.

It's baseball, for crying out loud. Anyone who turns down the chance to throw a ceremonial pitch for the Rangers should have never been asked to in the first place, and the governor knows exactly what he is doing by declining. He's hoping other Texans will boycott the organization too, and I have little faith that Rangers' fans will be swayed. Have you ever met one? They're serious.
