A tough start for one Amarillo man has turned into a new chapter on the open sea, as Seaman Tristian Watkins builds a better future in the U.S. Navy

How One Decision Changed His Life

Amarillo native Seaman Tristian Watkins is currently serving in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees. He is currently assigned to the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, Mississippi.

From Amarillo Roots to Navy Service

Watkins graduated from North Heights in 2021. He went to the recruiter's office with his brother, and that is when he enlisted five years ago.

I was in a bad spot, and I needed a new start, Watkins said. The Navy is a way to get out of it. I'm not regretting the decision.

Looking for a fresh start, Watkins turned to the U.S. Navy, where he could overcome challenges, find purpose, and build a career.

Rising Through the Ranks

As a Seaman in the Navy, Watkins serves as a culinary specialist.

According to the U.S. Navy, Navy Seabees provide a wide range of construction in support of operating forces, including roads, bridges, bunkers, airfields, and logistics bases. They also provide response support for disaster recovery. Seabees serve in both construction and support roles across a wide range of missions.

In his time in the Navy, Watkins has achieved many accomplishments.

I’m proud of everything I’ve been able to accomplish through hard work and patience, Watkins said. I was a wardroom baker as an E-2 which is normally an E-5 position, and I won the Iron Chef award with my cowboy chili.

A Dream Beyond the Navy

Watkins said that, if he is going to do something, he will do it to the best of his ability.  This is his reason for wanting to be out at sea. It is giving him experience he can use in his future endeavors, including opening his own restaurant.

He is getting that experience while serving his country.

The People Who Made It Possible

Watkins is thankful to his father and grandmother for making his Navy career possible.  Watkins said that he is thankful for his fiancée, Shelby.

Every hard day I have out to sea, I think of her, and that makes the day easier.

Watkins is also thankful for those who helped him when he lived in boys' homes.  He is thankful for Mr. Donnie and Beverly, who showed him that the path he was taking wasn't the right path. He also thanks Mr. Randall and his wife, Ashley, for their continued support of his career.
