Cooder Graw Plays Palo Duro Canyon Amphitheater October 3

One of the cool things about Palo Duro Canyon isn't just the beauty, the formations, and the hiking trails; it's the Pioneer Amphitheater. It's a beautiful stage that uses the canyon as a backdrop. Our area is blessed enough to have the TEXAS Outdoor Musical each summer, a wonderful musical that brings people from all over. Then we get to experience Shakespeare in the Canyon in the summer as well.

What happens when the summer ends and the weather is still nice? Why should the Pioneer Amphitheater sit empty? It shouldn't. That's why the wonderful people who bring you the TEXAS Outdoor Musical and Shakespeare in the Canyon are bringing you an amazing fall concert.

The Show: Cooder Graw and Charlie Shafter at Pioneer Amphitheater

Don't miss an evening with Cooder Graw on Saturday, October 3. They will be bringing their Texas/Red Dirt flair to Palo Duro Canyon. They aren't coming alone; Charlie Shafter will be opening for them. It's a show that will take you back, give you some nostalgia, and let you rock the evening away in Palo Duro Canyon. Doors open at 6 pm; show starts at 7 pm. You can purchase tickets here.

Cooder Graw hit the scene in 1997 here in Amarillo, playing covers at the Golden Light Cantina. Cooder Graw is led by Matt Martindale, lead singer/songwriter and rhythm guitarist, lead guitarist Kelly Turner, and Paul Baker on bass guitar. They released their first album, Home at the Golden Light, in 1998. Fun fact: Matthew McConaughey was the Executive Producer on the album. Matt Martindale and McConaughey were fraternity brothers.

A Personal Connection to Cooder Graw

Author's Note: I was proud to be a part of their album release party. We hosted a BBQ and party in the parking lot of Kat Country 101.9 (now 101.9 the Bull); then we moved the party to Midnight Rodeo, where I was privileged enough to bring Cooder Graw onto the stage to jam the night away. Those were the days!

What to Expect at the Show

Although it won't be the Midnight Rodeo stage, it will still be the same energy that we fell in love with at the Golden Light Cantina, Midnight Rodeo, or Homer's Backyard Ball when Cooder Graw took the stage.

Texas Outdoor Musical

The Texas Outdoor Musical has been a time-honored tradition this musical was written by Paul Green in 1960 and it tells the tale of the Texas Panhandle.

People from all over the world have made their way to Palo Duro Canyon to see this amazing outdoor musical. If you haven't seen it or seen it in a while, you need to come to see it again.

Enjoy these photos of TEXAS, but to get a true experience you have to see it live with Palo Duro Canyon as the backdrop.

The Wonders of Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas Panhandle

Often called the Grand Canyon of Texas, it's easy to feel small when surrounded by the towering land. Palo Duro offers stellar hiking and biking, camping, and even cabins to plan more of a family or lovers getaway. Explore it on foot, on wheels, on horses, etc. Cap off the day with an authentic taqueria meal in Amarillo, if you can stand the smell. They don't call it "Cow Town" for nothing.
