Community Mourns as Founder of Canyon’s Beloved Fat Boys BBQ Passes Away
One of the great things about living in this area is the people. Canyon is home to a great university, great people, and local businesses.
It's the people and the local businesses that make up the personality of a town. When people grow up in a town or attend college in a town they fall in love with the local businesses that surround them.
Canyon is one of those cities and one of the local businesses that many people grew up on or enjoyed while earning a degree was Fat Boys BBQ.
Fat Boys BBQ
Fat Boys was founded in 1988 by Terry Marler. Marler opened the restaurant in February 1988, smoking delicious BBQ for Canyon residents.
I remember as a kid, we lived in a small town that didn't have a Walmart (that was before every small town had one). We would drive to Canyon to shop at Walmart and then go by Fat Boys to pick up a BBQ Family pack and take it home for dinner. I remember Terry behind the counter chopping up brisket with that giant knife.
Fat Boys was always a treat for many families. Many college students would cross the street to enjoy a chopped brisket sandwich and chips after a long day of classes. Fat Boys was one of the most popular restaurants in Canyon. Marler was larger than life.
In January 2015, Marler retired and sold Fat Boys BBQ. With Marler no longer at the helm of the restaurant, it was good, but it was never the same as when Marler was running the show. There was something about the love Marler put into his food, whether it was the brisket, sausage, or ribs. Fat Boys closed permanently in April 2024.
May He Rest in Peace
Terry Marler said goodbye to this world on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, when he was 76. Memorial services will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024, at 2 pm at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel at 2800 Paramount.
Thank you Mr. Marler for bringing the most delicious BBQ. Many might have never known Marler personally, but if you ate at Fat Boys BBQ before January 2015, then your life and stomach were touched by this man.
