TEXAS Outdoor Musical Not Ending Despite Online Rumors
If you spend time on social media, you will find a lot of things that make you go hmm. Amarillo has plenty of social media pages and a lot of people who comment about things in their lives, how they liked or disliked a business or restaurant, and rumors they heard. One recent rumor got our attention: Is the TEXAS Outdoor Musical ending?
Where the Rumor Started
If you follow Save OUR Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum on Facebook, they are the group that is working tirelessly to help save the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. With their help, hopefully we'll see our beloved museum reopened in Canyon and on the WT Campus.
However, a post on the site gave cause for concern. One user wrote:
Has anyone heard anything about this being the last year for TEXAS Outdoor Musical?
I was told today that if we wanted to see it to get tickets, because it would be the last year for it. It was mentioned that it had something to do with the museum closing, and was wondering if anyone had other information?
The TEXAS Outdoor Musical has been a staple for 60 years in Palo Duro Canyon, so it seemed this mention was the start of a rumor stemming from the connection between the museum and TEXAS. The PPHM and the TEXAS Outdoor Musical are a part of the Cultural Foundation of the Texas Panhandle. Also, a feasibility study of renovations to the PPHM and the Pioneer Amphitheatre, presented by WT President Walter Wendler in 2024, came before the museum shut down in 2025.

However, before panic sets in that Canyon and PDC may be losing another attraction, we reached out to the TEXAS Outdoor Musical to squash the rumor.
There are no plans for this to be our last season. Our commitment is to doing everything we can to ensure TEXAS continues to be part of this community for generations to come. - Heather Friemel, Interim Executive Director, Cultural Foundation of the Texas Panhandle
Shakespeare in the Canyon This Summer
Friemel went on to say that they are focused on delivering an incredible experience for audiences and continuing to grow what they offer. This includes the addition of concerts and Shakespeare in the Canyon, which began on Tuesday, July 7, and continues every Tuesday through July. Tickets for Shakespeare in the Canyon are $25 and may be purchased here.
These additions reflect our commitment to building on the legacy of TEXAS while reaching new audiences and creating even more reasons for visitors to experience everything our region has to offer.
How to Support the Show
If you would like to help ensure the continuation of this play for another 60 years, you can donate to the Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation or become a member.
