Sad News; Lake McClellan Has Dried Up. But Don’t Lose Hope Yet.

It's heartbreaking for the many who have made memories at Lake McClellan. Visitors to the lake have recently shared photos on social media, saying that it has dried up. In the photos you can see grass growing where there was once water.

But don't lose hope just yet.

This Isn't The First Time This Has Happened

It's true. After searching for a bit, you'll find information showing several times that Lake McClellan has gone dry since the year 2000.

It's bounced back several times.

In fact, you can go back and find articles from 2016 where everyone was celebrating the return of Lake McClellan.

So don't lose hope just yet.

Going Dry Seems To Be A Personality Trait

Upon digging a little more into the history of the lake, you find several publications suggesting that you make a phone call to get current conditions before going out there.

Others point out that Lake McClellan has a habit of going dry during droughts.

It's even on the Texas Parks & Wildlife website.

What You Can Expect When There Is Water In Lake McClellan

When McClellan has water, there's a chance you could take a boat out for some fishing. The Texas Parks & Wildlife website doesn't recommend taking a boat out right now, but there is a boat ramp you can use once the water comes back.

Once the lake fills back up, I imagine it will have to be restocked with fish. TP&W lists catfish, crappie, bass, and sunfish as what you could possibly have expected to catch. Should the water level rise back to where it needs to be, I hope anglers will have their opportunity.

Trying To Stay Optimistic

Lakes in the panhandle all suffer from the same affliction. They're in an area that is prone to droughts. Lake Meredith has seen it's own fair share of desperate times.

Eventually Lake Meredith bounced back, and so has Lake McClellan.

Fingers crossed we get some rain, and a lot of it.
