To keep your home cool and not watch your energy bill explode through the roof, these are some steps you can take:

  • When you're not home, set your thermostat at a higher temperature. For instance, you can set it to 78 degrees when you're not home, and then lower the temperature once you walk through the door. Your AC won't be running all day with no one to appreciate it.
  • Close curtains and blinds to block out the sun. The sun is evil and hot in the summer. Block it from coming in through your windows, and keep things cool.
  • Close off unused rooms. This will reduce the workload on your AC to keep things cool.
  • For the love of all that is holy, DON'T FORGET TO REVERSE YOUR CEILING FANS. Fans should run counter-clockwise to give you that refreshing cool breeze.
  • Open windows at night, if possible, and use fans when you can. It will keep you cool and pack a lighter punch on your budget

Do some light maintenance on your AC system. Changing the filter is easy. Remembering to do so is the hard part. Change the filter.

Stay Safe During The Hot Texas Summer Weather This Year

If you don't have AC or a way to cool your house during the day, find a public place where you can go relax for a bit and stay cool. Pools are awesome for a little bit. Libraries have AC, books, and internet access. Malls also work.
