The Helium Monument has been a wonderful piece of art in Amarillo.  It's located in front of the Don Harrington Discovery Center at 1200 Streit Drive.  Buried under the monument are time capsules.

The Helium Centennial Time Columns Monument was erected in Amarillo, Texas during 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of helium. Amarillo was selected for its central role in the US Government's strategic helium reserve and the gas production from the Cliffside Gas Field beginning in 1927. The Bureau of Mines placed the Amarillo Helium Plant in operation in 1929 and has maintained its headquarters for the Federal Helium Program in Amarillo. In 1982 the Helium Monument was airlifted by helicopter from I-40 and Nelson to its current site at the Don Harrington Discovery Center.

As a part of the Helium Monument, several time capsules were buried below the monument. These time capsules were supposed to be opened 25, 50, 100, and 1,000 years from the date they were installed and this year marks the opening of the 50 year time capsule.  The first time capsule was opened in May of 1993.

In September of 2018 the Don Harrington Discovery Center and long with other partners will be holding a huge celebration and opening up the 50 year time capsule.  It's going to be a great time of celebration as well as seeing what was buried over 50 years ago.

We'll keep you up to date as we get more information about the opening of one of the Helium Monument Time Capsules in September.
