Westbound I-40 In Amarillo At A Standstill After Winter Storm
The Texas panhandle had a lot of snow dumped on it overnight last night. Traveling was tough to manage while the snow fell for hours in Amarillo. Today, conditions are still dangerous in many areas, and there are plenty of delays when trying to get around. As of 10:20 AM, westbound I-40 is at a standstill in Amarillo.
Traffic Woes In Amarillo, Texas After Winter Storm
According to information shared by the Amarillo Police Department on social media, traffic is backed up all the way to Western. One of my coworkers called me while on her way home and said that it wasn't just backed up, but traffic wasn't even moving.
The Amarillo Police Department is urging everyone to stay off of I-40 westbound if at all possible. Emergency crews have been working feverishly to try and get roads cleared. Unfortunately, when you have vehicles getting stuck or wrecks happening it slows down the process.
The best thing to do is stay home if you can.
If You Have To Travel, Be Prepared
If you have to be out and about in the snow and ice, be prepared. Have an emergency kit in your vehicle. You'll need ways to keep warm, some bottles of water, a way to charge your phone, and a first aid kit is always a good idea.
Give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to be. You can't be in a hurry today. Drive slow and leave plenty of space between you and the people around you. Keep an eye out and make room for emergency crews to do their job.
