Who Really Has Texas’ Largest High School Football Stadium?
There was a post recently on Facebook regarding the Happy State Bank Stadium in Canyon, Texas. The post included some very nice photos, and a few fun facts. For instance, the stadium was the "largest on-campus stadium in NCAA Division II." That's not what caught my eye, though.
I came away wondering, who really has the biggest high school football stadium in Texas?
The Battle Between Mesquite And Canyon, Texas
In the comments of the Facebook post regarding Happy State Bank Stadium in Canyon, Texas, it is mentioned that Google has it wrong regarding the biggest high school football stadium in Texas. They mention that it is, in fact, bigger than the one in Mesquite.
I decided to do a little digging and see for myself who really has the biggest stadium; Canyon, or Mesquite.
When I pulled up info on Memorial Stadium in Mesquite, the fact that it is the largest high school football stadium in Texas is in black and white print. There was no digging through tons of info. It's right there.
However, I ran into a bit of an issue when I pulled up the info for Happy State Bank Stadium in Canyon. It looks like the claim to largest high school football stadium might have a challenger.
The criteria used to make the distinction is the capacity. Going off of capacity, here is what we come up with:
- Memorial Stadium - Mesquite, Texas - Capacity 19,400
- Happy State Bank Stadium - Canyon, Texas - Capacity 20,000
Uh, oh.
Looks like our keyboard warrior friend in the comments is right. Judging by capacity, Happy State Bank Stadium is the largest high school football stadium in Texas.
Congrats, Canyon. You had a good run, Mesquite.
