Streaming is awesome. End of story. You get what you want, when you want. Apparently it's getting harder for traditional TV service providers to compete.

Here are the reasons an area company, Mid-Plains Telephone, decided to drop TV service.

Mid-Plains Telephone Giving Up TV In July

July 31, 2022 is the big day for Mid-Plains Telephone TV subscribers. That's the day that the company will officially end their TV service.

Before then, a handful of channels will disappear as contracts run out. Those channels go dark on June 30.

Channels affected include:

  • NBA
  • TBS
  • CNN
  • HLN
  • HBO
  • Cinemax

So, what could possibly be the culprit in causing Mid-Plains Telephone to give up TV service? You can probably guess...

Streaming And Programming Costs Are To Blame

On social media, Mid-Plains Telephone points to a couple of reasons why they're ending TV service. Neither one is shocking.

First, they mention the rise in popularity of streaming services. It makes sense. I cut the cord six years ago and never looked back.

For a while there was a golden age where I could get what I wanted, when I wanted, and even things I didn't know I wanted but was happy to stumble upon them. Now we have a million different streaming services, and quite frankly it's getting ridiculous.

Programming costs were another issue. Bringing all of these channels to the masses isn't cheap. If the masses aren't watching, it makes sense to cut your losses.

Mid-Plains Telephone went the extra step though for their TV customers. They have an entire breakdown on streaming services and how to get set up, plus the ones that include local channels.

Is It A Sign Of Things To Come

While Mid-Plains Telephone isn't the largest provider in the world, I'm sure they aren't the only ones feeling the crunch when it comes to how consumers are consuming their favorite shows.

It will be interesting to see in the future exactly what TV looks like. Streaming has really upset the balance.
