We're getting close to one of the most controversial annual traditions in Amarillo, Texas. It's something that happens every time the temperatures start to drop in the late fall and early winter.

Amarillo Parks and Recreation has announced that restrooms at the public parks will be closing soon. You have until November 15, 2025, to come up with a plan.

Why the Restrooms Close Every Winter

This controversial tradition is controversial because people would enjoy having access to the restrooms when they take their kids to play at any of the numerous playgrounds in the city. They also come in handy when you spend a nice day outside at a park.

The City says the decision to close the restrooms is to protect them from winter weather. The freezing temperatures are supposedly pretty problematic.

The restrooms won't be open again until March 2026, according to the City's Parks and Recreation Department. An announcement was shared on social media today.

Families React — Access, Options & Outrage

There's a lot of anger that surrounds this announcement every year. People get upset over losing access to the restrooms, and they hurl all kinds of accusations at the City. Some even throw out the theory that the whole thing has to do with the city's homeless population.

What's even more infuriating for these families is when the restrooms don't open back up when they're supposed to. It puts people in the awkward position of possibly ending their day out early, leaving and coming back, or finding a bush or tree...which I've seen on more than one occasion at one particular park in town.

What Can Be Done — Exploring Winter Access Alternatives

Surely there is a way to keep these restrooms open during the winter months that allows families the ability to make use of the facilities. Until that way is discovered, you'll need to keep in mind that restrooms at the parks are closed as of November 15, 2025.

Make sure you take potty breaks before you go.
