Christina Hendricks Was the Hand, But Not the Stomach, on ‘American Beauty’ Poster
Christina Hendricks. Hand model. Perhaps those two entities were previously thought to be mutually exclusive. But they're not, because Hendricks was the hand model on 1999's American Beauty poster.
Isn't that just the most beautiful thing? No, not the windswept plastic bag from the Academy's 2000 Best Picture winner, but the phalanges featured on the film's iconic ad. Which, yes, belong to Hendricks, as the Mad Men actress and Toy Story 4 voice star revealed on social media Thursday (Aug. 22). However, the accompanying stomach was apparently not Hendricks. See the image she shared down toward the bottom of this post.
Here's what Hendricks said: "Fun fact.... wait for it...I used to be a model and sometimes a hand model.... this is my hand and another model’s stomach....proud to be a part if this film in ANY WAY!!!"
Of course, TV and movie fans know the actress quickly exceeded her title of hand model with roles on shows like ER and Firefly in the early 2000s, soon moving into movies such as 2007's La Cucina. And who could forget Hendricks' career-making turn as 1960s office manager Joan Holloway, which commenced that very same year, on the aforementioned Mad Men?
Best Picture wasn't the only Oscar American Beauty took home at the 2000 ceremony. The film's Kevin Spacey — the actor who saw a fallout last year over sexual misconduct allegations — won Best Actor.
