Christmas Tree Drive In Amarillo Coming Up To Help Those In Need
I've heard of toy drives, but I don't know that I've ever heard of a tree drive before. This Saturday in Amarillo, there is a tree drive to help give those in need a Christmas tree.
It's the Oh Christmas Tree Drive, and it is Saturday (Dec 5) from 2 PM - 4 PM. It will be held behind the Civic Center at SE 5th and S Johnson.
The drive is for trees and ornaments. They will be given to families of City of Amarillo Coming Home. If there are trees and ornaments left over, they will be distributed to other non-profit organizations in the area.
If you are unfamiliar with the City of Amarillo Coming Home program, it was started in 2018. It operates under the "housing first" philosophy. It gives those who are chronically homeless and have complex needs housing and case management.
Earlier this year, an update on the program touted its success. City of Amarillo Coming Home provided housing for some people who had been homeless for years.

There's something almost magical about a Christmas tree. There's a calming effect that takes place once they're up and decorated, and then you finally plug it in. Something about those trees just takes my stress levels down a few notches.
That's why I love this idea. When you're struggling and working on getting back on your feet, normal days are tough enough. Struggling through the holidays is absolute misery. This would be a great way to let those who are having a tough time know that they are cared about, and that they do matter.
If you can, drop off some ornaments or a tree this Saturday.
